Like most other drummers roaming this earth, as a child I found myself
tapping on anything that made a unique noise. Despite the primal nature of it
all, there were a few profound moments in time that revealed to me that I
was destined to do what I do. Not all people are so blessed. Regardless of
whatever successes or failures I might experience, I know why I'm here.
Early on, I learned to play drums (for the most part) on my own. But when the
opportunity opened up for me in the early '80's to study with great teachers in New York City, I
seized it. During that time I was fortunate to study with Ed Soph, Bob
Moses and Norman Grossman. Also during that time I got a call to play on a
national ad campaign from the late Don Elliot. Don was a heavy weight producer/
engineer in Connecticut. (That was before the dawn of sequencers and drums
machines.) Working with Don I learned the importance of playing with
a click and reading. It was also around that time that I built my first
studio. Because I had done some sessions with legendary RCA recording engineer
Jack Jones, I learned he taught a course in studio engineering. It was a great opportunity
for me to learn from the best. Of course the technology has changed, but what I
learned from Jack in those early years has been invaluable.
